In this fourth part of our video interview series, Rob O’Byrne and Simon Bowen talk about Systems Implementation.

Why do some major IT programs go off the rails?

There’s this pattern of thinking that people have: buy the right system and it will solve all our problems. There’s never the one right system. Every system will always have a major point of constraint. As you improve or free up that major point of constraint, the next point of constraint becomes evident. It’s people that make systems work if they use them, it’s people that improve systems as well.

What makes a really good systems implementation?

One is to say, “this is the system, everyone has to shift.” The alternative is “we design the system based on path of least resistance and find positive variance”
